Maleku Tribe

Maleku

The Maleku are an indigenous people living in the northwest region of Costa Rica. Around 600 aboriginal people live on the reserve, making them the smallest tribe in the country.

Maleku pride themselves on their knowledge of the forest resources. They say the forest is their restaurant, pharmacy and hardware store.

They have depended upon tourism to meet needs that the shrinking forest can no longer provide, and when the pandemic hit, they did not receive any governmental aid. The items you purchase will help them as they recover during these difficult times.
